How to Easily Cube a Watermelon

I don't know about you but when I buy a watermelon, I feel like I need to clear the counter for the mess that's about to happen. That is, until I found this technique for how to easily cube a watermelon. So easy and very little mess. Ready?

The first step in cubing your watermelon is to choose a good one. Don't you hate it when you get a watermelon home from the store only to find it's a dud? Not sweet at all. Never good.

Choosing a good watermelon is easy, if you know what to look for:  start with finding one with the ugly yellow spot on it. I know that seems wrong, but a yellow spot means that baby has ripened from sitting on the ground. Bonus points for the brown scabby patches that indicate sweetness.

When you pick it up, it should feel heavy for it's size and should sound hollow when thumped. If it passes the test, you have a winner.

Now, you'll want to wash it. Seems crazy, but think about where that watermelon's been. Then you are going to take a knife and cut into it, essentially spreading that dirt and germs to the inside. Yuck.

Just cut that melon into quarters - just slice it in half, and then half again. Easy so far, right?

Now just make vertical cuts about every inch going straight down. Stop before you hit the rind.

Then just make horizontal cuts from one side to the other.

Then just dump it on it's side and let the little cubes fall out. Just repeat for each of the quarters…

Want to make your watermelon even sweeter without adding more calories? Chop up some mint and toss that with your cubes. Something about that cool mint brings out the natural sweetness in the melon. Delicious.
