Looking for Treasure

Monday, November 16, 2009

This past weekend, the weather was absolutely beautiful. Just right for a hike through the nature area near our home. Jackbird absolutely loves doing just about anything that involves hiking or trekking so we were excited to try out geocaching.... Have you heard of it?

We'd done letterboxing before but I felt like we had done most of the ones near our house, which is why we were excited to discover a geocaching app for the iPhone.

If you are not familiar with geocaching, it's basically like a world wide treasure hunt. There are almost 950,000 geocaches around the world, so no matter where you are there's bound to be a few near you.

Using GPS (on your iPhone) and compass, you follow clues to find the hidden treasure. Sounds easy, but you have to pay attention to your surroundings so you can follow the clues.

The treasure isn't really anything fabulous - it just a logbook or small prize. The real treasure is having an excuse to hike around the great outdoors...

Discover new places and things, look for wildlife.

And spend a little extra time with the kids... away from the tv set.

What did you do this weekend?
