DIY: How to Make Your Own Headband

Thursday, September 03, 2009

I have been looking for a new headband since I got my hair chopped last week, so was excited to stumbled upon this headband in the Real Steals for Fall Trends in Real Simple magazine. Then I looked at the price... $63. Seriously, does this count as a steal? Not in my book.

So... I decided to make it myself. And the total cost? $0.01. Seriously.

Step 1:

Gather your materials - the elastic bands I found 100 for $1 (thank you Dollar Tree), fabric glue, ribbon (I used what I had on hand), binder clips or clothespins, needle & thread, scissors.

Step 2:

Wrap the ribbon around your head to figure out how long you want it to be (make sure to account for the elastic band when figuring the length). After cutting the ribbon, use a match to singe the ends to keep them from unraveling. Place a dab of glue on one end.

Step 3:

Fold the ribbon over the elastic band and clamp it down with your binder clip.

Step 4:

Repeat with the other end making sure that the ribbon is not twisted.

Step 5:

While that's drying you can make a rosette. Simply take another piece of ribbon, cut about 4 - 6 inches (depending how large you'd like it to be - make sure to singe the ends). Baste a simple stitch along one side. I used contrasting ribbon just so you could see the stitches... normally I would have used black.

Step 6:
Once you've gotten to the end of the ribbon, pull the thread so the ribbon starts to gather. Pull it together until it makes a little rosette. Then simply knot the thread (you can add a small dot of glue to hold it together for added strength).

Step 7:

Next add a dab of glue to your rosette on the back side.

Step 8:

Attach it to the ribbon (making sure to not put it right in the center... you don't want to look like a rosette is growing out of your head).

I made a ton of these for Kate too... some with rosettes, some with larger rosettes with buttons in the middle and some with just buttons. Now I'm not going to stress about her losing them at school or the playground since it's easy enough - and affordable enough - to make another.

**I actually went a little headband crazy and made about 8 different ones the other night... took me all of 30 minutes. And now I'm feeling like Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club (at the end, mind you). Love it!**
