Recipe: There's More Than One Way to Grill a Burger

Friday, August 21, 2009

I don't know about you, but burgers are a definite summer staple at our house. We grill burgers at least once a week. I try to vary things up... sometimes turkey, sometimes beef... but always with different types of toppings...

Let's start with a basic burger... I think they're best grilled rather than fried or cooked in the oven. According to Bobby Flay (we all know about my love for Bobby, don't we?), if you want to go beef use ground chuck and use one that's 80% lean. For turkey, you need to opt for one closer to 90% lean. To keep your turkey from drying out too much on the grill give a light brushing of olive oil right before placing on the grill. Buffalo, too, is an excellent healthier choice, but be very careful not to overcook it since it dries out very easily.

Got the basics down? Let's move on to more exciting things...

Guacamole Burgers

2 Ripe Avocados (preferably Haas)
1 Jalapeno, finely chopped
Juice of small lime
2 T Cilantro, chopped
1 T Onion Powder
2 lbs Ground Meat
Handful of Pickled Jalapenos, chopped
Cheddar Cheese

Combine avocados through onion powder together in a bowl to create the guacamole (this can be done up to an hour in advance). Heat your grill to high.

Form the meat into patties 1" thick. Place on hot grill for 4-5 minutes then turn and continue cooking on medium. In the last minute place shredded cheddar on the burgers. Close the lid of your grill.

Remove burgers from grill, top with guacamole & pickled jalapenos. I like to give mine a little extra kick with some salsa.

Blue Cheese Burgers

1/4 C Blue Cheese, crumbled
1/4 C Red Wine
1/4 C White Onion, chopped fine
1 lb. Ground Beef
Olive Oil

Preheat your grill. Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl until well mixed. Divide into patties. Brush each patty with a little of the oil and then place on hot grill. Cook around 4 minutes then turn over and continue cooking on medium for 4-5 minutes more. Remove from grill and dress your burger as you normal (ketchup, mustard, etc.).

Paired with a good margarita and you can't go wrong with either one of these. Tell me... what do you like on your burgers?
