Stairway to Heaven

Finally! The stairs are complete! We are so pleased with with the way they turned out (and the fact that we did it ourselves!).

We ripped out the old carpet and in doing so started the dreaded "Domino Effect." I say this because each time we start a DIY project it seems to end up snowballing.

In this case, we took up the carpet off the stairs and much to our horror realized that it's possibly been living in this house about 20 years (insert retching noise here).  As you can imagine once we figured this out, we decided we needed to get the rest of this monster out of here. I don't even want to think about the dust mites.

Our downstairs is all hardwoods & brick. Upstairs (the 4 bedrooms & hallway) is wall to wall carpet. Which has brought up the conversation... do we update with new carpet in the bedrooms or dole out the extra dough for more hardwoods?

That said, we did find a fabulous environmentally friendly carpet which is manufactured from corn sugars. Total cost of doing that would be roughly $4.50 a sq foot (including pad & installation). If we go for it and do the hardwoods, we are looking at $7.50 sq. foot. It doesn't sound like much of a difference, but you have to factor in how much we need (700 sq. feet) plus I'll need to buy rugs (insert cash register noise here) if we go the hardwood route.

What's your opinion... carpet or hardwoods??
